Aloe vera benefits for hair

Naturally occurring aloe vera offers a range of benefits for hair.

    • Hydrates and detangles hair
Organic aloe vera has moisturising, detangling and smoothing properties. These can help hydrate dry hair, calm natural curls and reduce frizz.
    • Soothes an itchy scalp
Aloe vera is known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It can also reduce the scaliness and itchiness caused by seborrheic dermatitis, an inflammatory scalp condition associated with dandruff, redness and scaly patches.
    • Strengthens the hair
Aloe vera’s active ingredients, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and vitamins (including vitamins A, B12, C, and E) support healthy hair follicles. Aloe vera also includes collagen, which helps strengthen the hair.
    • Helps control greasy hair
The enzymes in aloe vera help break down fats and remove excess oil (sebum), controlling greasiness.
    • Protects against UV damage
Research indicates that fresh aloe vera juice provides some protection against harmful UV rays, potentially protecting the hair against sun damage and loss of colour.
    • Supports hair growth
There isn’t conclusive, scientific evidence that aloe vera accelerates hair growth – but aloe vera does contain the chemical compound, aloenin. This is thought to improve hair health, reduce breakage and indirectly support hair growth.

Aloe vera and low porosity hair

Aloe vera is good for hair with low porosity because this hair type is vulnerable to dryness – and aloe vera has excellent hydrating properties.

Look for aloe vera combined with other natural oils, to lock in moisture and leave hair feeling softer and more manageable.

A natural dandruff treatment

Pure aloe vera is rich in salicylic acid, a powerful antiseptic agent that removes scaly skin typical of dandruff.

By stripping away the outer layer of the dermis, salicylic acid helps prevent recurring fungal infections, while the antiseptic properties support a healthy scalp.

Aloe vera also contains fatty acids with anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds can help cool and calm an irritated scalp.

Aloe vera side-effects on hair

Aloe vera is a gentle, naturally occurring substance, with no known negative side-effects when topically applied to skin or hair. However, pure aloe vera gel shouldn’t be left in the hair for too long.
