Real hair versus synthetic wigs

Real hair wigs might seem more appealing but there are some definite downsides.

For starters, they can be exorbitantly expensive. Also, they aren’t necessarily better quality just because the hair is real.

High-end synthetic options are made from man-made fibres that have the appearance and even the same feel as real hair. They can also be more durable and less prone to breakage.

Can they be heat styled?

Most modern synthetic wigs can be heat styled.

Modern synthetic fibres are heat resistant and can be heat-styled into curls or straightened.

However, make sure to check the manufacturer’s specifications first. Cheaper synthetics choices might not be heat resistant enough to withstand a hair straightener or curling tongs.

Wigs also need much less heat-styling than real hair because they aren’t washed as frequently and hold a style indefinitely.

Can a synthetic wig be washed?

Yes. However, synthetic options don’t need frequent washing like real hair.

Generally, a synthetic wig should be washed after you’ve worn it about 30 times. If you’re in constant contact with cigarette smoke, dust or strong perfumes, you might need to wash it more frequently.

Wigs should be washed in cool or lukewarm water with anti-static wig shampoo. If you can’t find wig shampoo, anti-frizz shampoos also work well.

Don’t forget to detangle your wig with a wide-tooth comb before washing.
